The majority of the pipes that I have seen with a metal ring around the rim are made of... Chit (spelling for a diffrent word )
However, I have seen some higher end pipes with a silver, brass or other metal around the rim... I'm guessing it's to keep from charing the rim...
That's my .02 cents...

Exactly. Damn Alex, you keep surprising me with these beautiful pipes i will probably never have a change nor money to get. Then again, i've been limiting my AD's, if i buy some, i will sell some as well. Not to get myself things i have no or only little use.
Seriously # 1 : the metal insert doesn't go deep into bowl, so i would say that's decent, i can take it if you do not want
Seriously # 2: Me and the 1st lady will be traveling to Estonia and Latvia for a vacation soon after xmas. Prices there are pretty cheap. I was already talking to a family friend who lives there, and now i got my eyes on a Pete Molly Malone twins cheaply. Time will tell, pics to follow.
Seriously # 3 : Damn cool tamper you had in your previous post.'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'

Many, many years ago ...when people didn't have gas lighters.
They used coal from fireplace to light pipes.
So. At the beginning these silver/metal rings were used to save wooden bowl from the fire.Alex Ts.

I have heard of a wire mesh disk that goes into a pipe. I believe the idea was to keep the pipe from gurgling. I'm pretty sure it was a complete flop on the marketing side and a bigger flop on actualy working. I don't remember where I read this but if I'm not mistaken it was from some long dead pipe thread found via some random google search.
No that pistol isn't the only thing under my kilt, but I can tell you both of them work just fine

Thanked: 983That mesh was put in at the bottom of the pipe to create air space. It allowed for all of the tobacco to burn to ash, making for a drier smoke. I've not used one, but I have a pipe I wouldn't mind trying one in. If I ever do, I'll let you know how it goes.
