It's a treat to hone one which has never been honed before! Teeny, even bevels are SWEET!
I usually never bother with the Escher on American hard steel, but will make an exception for this Genco.
Lovely DeRoma, up for auction to benefit Movember in the classifieds. Ending soon, so go bid!

So this is A Hone of the Day Situation.
Jnats loaned me this hone.
I tried to contact him to return HIS hone.
No answer thru SRP or his website.
If anyone hears from him, have him contact me so that I can return his Hone to him.
I would do the same for any of you, I know you would reciprocate.
Help me find our friend to return his rightful property.
Your only as good as your last hone job.

Hi ultrasoundguy
Nice stone BTW, Finger stones are used for polishing Japanese knives & swords so you can SEE the steel. It has been done this way many years. Polishing with buffers, or micro mesh, etc. apparently does not produce the same effect.
You have to make your own finger stones or you can buy some online but who knows what the quality is, probably not very good.. I am learning too, getting better. Got to start somewhere. Some contributing resources would be: So Yamashita, Alex, Maksim has YouTube video Finger stones How To, Dr. Naka. Mike

I have used both uchigumori and kiita fingerstones to maintain the bevels on my Takeda knives and have also thinned and polished a Masahiro Virgin Carbon gyuto and polished it to 2k grit sandpaper, then Hakka, kiita, suita, uchigumori... quite an interesting excercise. My goal was to see if I could turn a cheap (but with fine steel) knife into a better one, and the answer is yes but not if your time is worth anything. Like modding a Gold Dollar, it's fun but not cost-effective.
I also have some uchigumori powder that was sold by Ken at CKTG, but I've never used it, it seems pretty coarse. The traditional paste is made as you use it by rubbing a hazuya and an uchigumori together to make the paste with a little distilled water.
Anyway, if Modine or Prodigy would like some, let me know. Also Kyle, if you want a fingerstone or two and some stock I have plenty.
Most suita polish steel pretty well, and the uchigumori is a suita also, a 'ceiling' suita. Ilzuka-San uses an Ohira suita to polish the Shigefusa knives IIRC.
I'll try to get some images up tomorrow.
