It's a Guangxi hone. They call it "12k" which is not really correct since that is impossible, or at least impractical, to gauge with a natural stone. It's at best an estimation of an equivalency to a synthetic.
That all being said, it is cheap, it is huge and it works well. Of course there's a lot of variance with naturals but this one is very slate like, in fact I think it probably is a slate. It slurries easily, a whitish gray, milky slurry and it leaves a nice frosty bevel plane similar to an Ark. They claim it is slow but I found it to cut fairly quickly, perhaps because I am so heavily invested in Arks which are the epitome of slow so it didn't seem like it by comparison. I have a method though which makes even slow stones go pretty quickly though so, there's that
I've only shaved off of one edge so far but it makes a nice finish for a first run. It was pretty crisp but not overly so like an Ark can be. It was smooth enough though so it didn't seem prickly.
All in all I recommend it. It is pleasant to hone on especially if you are one who likes to hone or gets caught up in the "zen" of honing. Actually I hate that term. I prefer to think of it as meditative...but whatever. If that's your thing you'll love it. It has a "softer" feel than Arks do but not mushy or muddy feeling. I'm glad I bought it. Ebay is where I got mine but they are easy enough to find I think.
Here are some pics after lapping.

Or that, but not if he actually wanted to find one. Haven't heard that name for a while though Tim. It actually works pretty well but I think 12k is a little generous. BUT, it's cheap and pretty good bang for the buck...on a case by case basis of course. 30-40 dollars for a hone that size is worth a gamble...maybe, YMMV.

Thanked: 154They're just a bit dirty with light scratches.
What I think I'm going to do is a light restoration, with sand paper 400 -> 3000 and a good scrubbing (probably not in that order), then the hones it is. They feel very dull so I'll have to tape and start low.
Then off to the "I have nothing to shave with today" cabinet lol.Beautiful is important, but when all is said and done, you will always be faithful to a good shaver while a bad one may detter you from ever trying again. Judge with your skin, not your eyes.
