Thanked: 4206That bog oak is great stuff to turn or shape.
Used it for scales, Brushes, pipes and a trinket box for the wife so far.
Like outback said, nearly petrified so hard as rock. And a great filler for horn with bug bites evidently as well.
They age rate it based on its colour as the log is extracted from the bog. Seems it goes blacker as it absorbs more tannic acid from the peat it’s covered in all those centuries.
That’s also what kept it from decomposing as I understand..
Truly awesome stuff."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."

Thanked: 580You would be hard pressed to tell the difference between Kauri, swamp Kauri and ancient Kauri.
Ancient Kauri might be a little darker maybe. Ancient Kauri is carbon dated from reliable sources.
I have turned all three on a wood lathe. Like all timber, the grain and pattern vary a lot.
A nice piece has an almost 3 dimensional look to the grain, hard to describe. An average piece looks like a chunk of old box pine...Into this house we're born, into this world we're thrown ~ Jim Morrison

Did some looking around for the bog oak and most is cut a little too short for my liking. Im not in a hurry to buy any but thought id point this out if your looking to buy. Most seem to be cut less than 6" so be sure to check the sizes.
It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 4827Mihai that brush handle is pretty nice. I like the bits of colour that Mother Nature tosses in here and there.

Saved the day from being a somewhat total loss by turning 2 Jos Rodgers silverplate knives with sterling bolsters into 2 fancy snurdlers. Getting near the end on them.
Managed to get some of the hallmarks on the blades.
