Is bog oak really hard or oily? Assuming you finished with Tru oil. On my phone that second picture could have passed for horn. Those scales are nice by the way.

I was told it was 5000+ yrs old, so yeah, its almost petrified. Hard as Chinese arithmetic, or a wedding night wiener.

And yes, it can be difficult to tell the difference between it and horn, if finished properly.

Finished the repair on MrZ' scale, put a bit of pressure on it, more than it would see in normal use, and it held quite well.



Now for a few days in oil, depending how they come out, I may put them in dye to even the color, then see about getting some gold, back in the stamp.

Here's some Bog Oak left alone, natural.

Not all Bog Oak is black, Jerry.
I have a Razor from MikeT here which has bog oak scales.
Unmistakable stuff. Seems he sent a bunch of the black around?

They're even shaped the same, and the texture is alike, nicely done! Guess I now know what kind of wood it is

Well, outback styled the scales to the same shape and dimensions as the original yellow scales.
Did a top-notch job.

I have some "ancient Kauri" that in itself is neat and old but it is soft and not near fossilized.

Just thought I would bring it up because just because it is old does not mean it is hard as a brick and will work good for scales.

That IS some interesting stuff... Brother, could you spare enough for some scales?
