Thanked: 315Very nice Jerry! You have some classy looking furniture for your razors AND stones.
What is in the red wood box? Below pink and white stone. Yes, I'm being nosey.
As far as what I'm working on.
Just got a package in the mail today. Cut up and bagged some soap samples from GQ and Stirling for my Dad. Cleaned up my Slim and a Schick for him to try out and choose from. I think he is having a little trouble with dexterity in his hands so I'm giving him a twist open DE to replace the Merkur I gave him for Christmas a few years ago. The Schick has a longer handle, but he may like having an adjustable razor after he tries it.- Joshua

Joshua, that is a PHIG hiding in that box.
Very hard, fine stone. I got it from Mike/Outback. He put an edge on a razor with it because I was saying "There is no such thing as too keen" and sent me the razor and stone to play with.
I was wrong!
This PHIG put an edge on a razor that you have to tone down with a couple K of laps on a strop. After 5 shaves and 1000+ strop laps, it makes for a fine edge. Still trying to figure out when and where to use it.
My finishers:
Jnat, Arkie, Zulu, 12k and 20k. Step back from that is a Coti, Jap Barber Hone, and the Apart Barber Hone. I'll pick up a Thuri someday but I like my stones on the large size, and that makes for a big cost. Who knows, I might get lucky some day and find one.
Now to get time to really learn all these stones. Ha. The synthetics work out well for me. Still learning the romance of the naturals. It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 315That sounds like an interesting hone. I wonder if that would work well for tools and knives requiring really keen edges.

I never messed with the People's Hone of Indeterminable Grit.
Sounds like fewer laps are required, Jerry?
So a few projects are going forward.
I took my Mappin Lancet out of the silver scales I had put on a long while back in favor of some old bone which will be more correct. I will go with some of Austin's collars and bronze rod.
A neat old 15/16 German blade with little wear and a lovely grind sold by Balke, Suerth & Co. of New York.
I will totally unpin it and work on some light issues under the backside spine, clean and polish the Bakelite scales. It will go back with Austin's nickel-silver collars and silver pins.
Boy! Do I need a SHAVE!

I have completed the rescale of my Lancet Razor. Turned-out nice.
They always look too short for the scales....Until you open it!
These were still about 1/8 too long, but the balance is great.
These are HEAVY blades! The collars are brass from Austin and the pins are bronze.
Freshly-polished, the pins will go to the contrast after a while.
Managed to not ding the edge, so strop and shave!
Now on to disassembling my German beast!

I have wrestled this thing apart. The front is perfect.
The back will take some compounds up under the spine and on the spine it'self.
Bummer....No hone wear at all!
Oh well....I told the seller what it was like as I made a best offer.
Off to work I go.

Thanked: 4206Nice projects Tom. A Lancet reborn,, so cool.
Me, turning back to a razor project myself.
Going with streaked honey horn and transferring the bolsters.
Almost to shape, now the fussy work.

Excellent, Mike! Get all practiced-up on that fussy stuff.
I got's some to send up there!
All meat and taters for the last few hours. 600 greaseless and some dremel wheels.
Good as it's gonna get. Now to lay it flat on my India hone and see how bad I screwed-up the spine. It LOOKS good, anyway!
I smell a beer.....or 3!Last edited by sharptonn; 06-15-2018 at 11:40 PM.

Thanked: 315Nice projects Sharptonn. I'm trying to keep an eye out for a something like a concave or lancet. I would like to see how they shave. I'm beginning to favor hollow ground blades but I would like to try one with more weight to it.
Mike, streaked horn with bolsters should look great!- Joshua

Both nice jobs Tom. You sure took care of the back of that blade and the Lancer is a beauty. Need to find one of those for my collection some day. I think it looks very nice in the new scales.
As far as the Peoples hone of inditerminate grit, this one is so hard it takes a lot of laps to get anywhere with it. Ive tried a touch of soap in the water as it just beads off if you dont add a little something. I havent used it much so i havnt learned when the stone is telling me Enough! Just need to spend more time with it.
BTW, Exellent pinning! I need to come over and take lessons.Last edited by Gasman; 06-16-2018 at 02:20 AM.
