Depending on the state, there are health food stores that carry it, though easier on line, more concentrated hydrogen peroxide. They add it to water and drink it and other health oriented practices.
Nice shorty Jerry! Man I like the tip on that, that is some quality work on that one.
Here is that W&B taken apart. I took all my tools to work, so I had to make due with what you see in the picture and a small thin nail. Nice to know it's possible to do with minimal tools.
I'll start in on the blade tomorrow, not going to try to get the blade face perfect... Leave a little character.

It was a bottle I found in the wife's stash of medical supplies. I'd bet 100 bucks it's the standard stuff. Most likely bought at Wally World. She doesn't do fancy hair stuff so I'd bet it is NOT the strong stuff. Damn old lady still has dark hair and doesn't die it.
I guess I will let the bone sit in the bottle for a few days then check to see what they look like. Maybe I should mark the bottle so the wife doesn't try and use it for medical reasons. Ha.
Honed up the shorty and just got my shave on. 1K thru 12K then on the Arkie for a while. Nice smooth shave.
Mike T., did you drill out the pins with that paddle bit? That Reaper blade looks great! It's just Sharpening, right?

Nothing wrong with using the lighter stuff, Jerry.
Takes longer and you learn more!

Temp and duration are as important as is strength of the solution.
Pick it out of there every day or two. Look at it.
I have found using strong things makes stuff happen too fast and radical. A bit at a time and I can choose when to stop?

Thanked: 315Dang that came out looking good!! What did you do to the scales?! They look so much better. You're right, it doesn't look like a shorty. Are the scales discolored or was it supposed to be a sunburst effect? With that new shine it looks cool.
I'm not sure I want to see the Ressler in this thread. That one was hard to let go. I was serious when I said I may try to get it back later!- Joshua

Thanked: 315And Jerry, did you get any before pics of those bone scales? Would really like to see the effect the peroxide has on them.

Thanked: 556Jerry, that cut off job is impressive. I knew you could make scales and your ability to clean up the horn is also impressive, but the way you reshaped that blade ... WOW.

Sorry, Josh. No before on the scales besides the pic of everything together. One set had rust that I don't think will come out plus cracks. Not sure I will be able to salvage them. But I'm going to try. The scales were just cleaned up and polished and waxed. Soft plastic of some kind. Very flexible. They might be discolored a bit but I think the color is the way it was made. Being plastic I didn't think soaking in oil would help.
I'll make you a deal on the Ressler when I'm done with it. 500 and it's yours. LOL.
Reshaping the blade takes a bit of practice but it's not really hard to do. Takes time and a lot of sanding of the cut off parts. I'm not as good as some of the guys here but after you have done a few you get the hang of it. This is my 3rd shorty so it wasn't as nerve-wracking doing the cutting this time. It's just Sharpening, right?
