    You are correct, Oz! Might be old stained ivory. Don't see the capillaries, do we? Looks like oil has permeated the top of the backside scale.....Perhaps a soak in some 3% peroxide and induce a tea patina after? (just thinking..)

    There was a discussion about this.. can't remember what thread.. but we determined they were bone. I would certainly not mind being mistaken. I soaked then in peroxide for about a week.. whitened them up some. Tea patina eh? Ill do a search.. sounds like something I'd like to try.
