Dang Tom! That's some serious work, serious skills!
I had assumed that the way that razor is now, is how it was manufactured..
When going over how scales with backing would function, it seems that the gaps between the external scale pieces would open and close with the flexing of the scales along with the backing becoming weakened at those points. But that is probably a negligible amount and of little concern...?
Have you replaced or added backing before? What gauge?
LOL
Every time I get one of my silly ideas my homework/studies increase exponentially.. gonna have to just work my way up slowly to the point of mastery, at which point my skills and knowledge match my ideas! Hehehe
Excellent work Master Sharptonn, top notch!

Mike, they would actually flex a bit between the pearl and the bakelite with a wedge-shaped wedge at the end. I found flexing a bit at 4 spots did not work well.
I actually changed it to a spacer down there to eliminate the flex. Did not want to see the pearl bits popping off and it made the scales more rigid as I could then dribble some CA in between the bits.
Having the scales more stable, I got the blade to center and stay that way.
The liners are from an old MOP razor. Leftover parts.
Thank you, Sir!Last edited by sharptonn; 07-01-2016 at 02:38 PM.

I remember that thread. That was a very good fix Tom. I have one that has a piece of MOP broken off one end. I will fixit one day.

Okay thanks, that's some good info.
A large part of my planning on projects is done in my head. While thinking about backed scales that "flex" has bugged me, as some materials don't like to flex and or the gap issue.
Molding scale end-cap/bolsters is really a big interest of mine. Everybody loves those things but I haven't seen any made. Silver clay is a good option though there are some technical difficulties to conquer. I've got the clay, kiln, numerous tools, etc...
Now we just have to finish packing the house, drive 2000 miles, unload, settle in, AND THEN the workshop!
Dang, it sounds so easy when I put it all in one sentence.
LOL

Been quite busy lately, but I finally finished the scales for the Higgens this morning.
Made from 5000 + yrs. old Bog Oak. The tanic acid has given this wood a jet black color, just like Bakelite or horn. The finish is Minwax polycrylic.
Made the scales to closely resemble the W&B FBU, being the blade is a smaller version of the FBU.

Well I just picked up a nice 6/8 round toe Schulze Weyer razor with a set of brown scales that had some slight nicks and blemishes in them. I decided to try a new material to me at re-scaling which is a copper/silver polyester resin. Never used this material before and wanted to see how it works........plus I loved the color scheme.
I made these a little unorthodox in shape to experiment a bit since this is a personal razor. I really don't do re-scaling as of yet for other people. I am trying to improve my technique right now so I practice on my razors that need scales.
But here is the final product.
