That's cool looking stuff! IMO there are so many positives about working with acrylic - it's easy to work, so many great colors and designs, polishes nicely, easy to clean and repair scratches, waterproof and doesn't need to be coated with anything - it just works. Looking forward to seeing the finished project.

They may have been boiled leather. I thought mine were some kind of paper mache until Geezer did a post about boiled leather scales, at which time I came to believe that that is what they are.

    Another less than perfect picture.
So I bleached the scales in peroxide, then boiled them in tea for about ten minutes, then let them soak overnight. The tea was super strong, three bags and a cup of water. I then wet sanded at 2K grit to get the color where I am mostly happy with the effect, I also gave it a bit of a scrub with my toothbrush and toothpaste to her go a little deeper. I will give them a coat of wax once I have them matching in color and then I am calling it good.

Ill buy it. They didn't seem like paper when dry but came apart like wet cardboard when. Oh well. The blade is ready for the stones along with another Henckels i just pinned up.

Great aging on those Shaun! What kind of tea did you use? Certainly gave a nice effect on those bones.
    Nice work.

Matt, that is a really big task, but they have to be done. Good luck!

Mike, I used orange pekoe tea. I thought it isn;t really drinkable so it is probably best used for staining. I do like the effect a lot. I did lighten up the grooves on the ends ever so slightly with a chisel. My original plan was to use an eraser to get the effect, as opposed to 2000grit paper, but the eraser did not touch the tea stain at all, and the tooth brush and toothpaste did not do much either.
