A while back I was talking with Outback and I showed him a picture of a blade that had a big chunk out of the toe. He said great candidate for a shorty. Didn't know what that was, but he sent pictures as well as instructions.

Okay Mike (Outback) I followed your instructions to the letter on how to make a shorty. And here it is! It turned out really well and I still have both of my eyes. The blade was originally 5/8 (still is), but now much shorter. It is a John Williams Damascus Steel Straight Razor.
It is the one on the top of the photo (like you wouldn't be able to tell) along with a full size razor.

Thanks for all your help and guidance Mike. It really worked out well!!!

    Turned out great John!!
Don't destroy those scales, make a set that fit the blade, save those for future restores.

Don't know if you have made them before or not, but it's not too difficult. I've got a few broken sets here, just for shorty projects...should you want to give it a try. Just a little reshaping of the profile, drill a new pivot hole, and presto, custom celluloid scales. One set is Bakelite, 3rd from right, with flat sides.

BTW. How long is the cutting edge now. Looks to be a bit longer than a SE blade, but not by much.

    It is now 1 3/4" - I think that's still usable?

Any time, that's what we do here.
Help other's who ask, or need it.

At least.. That's how I feel about SRP.
Ive received guidance before, so I'm following suit, by paying it forward to others. Makes it like a huge family, because we are, here.

Mike - Here's a visual comparison next to a DE on the true length of the blade. If nothing else, a great companion when I travel!

    Sure is..!!
I've got one not much bigger than a SE razor blade, it was my first shorty.
Tuzi now has the scales from it, on his Adoration.

I've been holding on to those scales for almost two years, waiting for someone who needed them, or myself, if I found another blade.
