Thread: What are you working on?

All in all it was a pretty fun Saturday. I worked on my razor projects. I practiced on the the mini feather (black handle) on learning how to cut steel before I went after the John Williams. It paid off! The mini feather I can use to trim very tight spots. I tried it out a while ago and it works great. Got to do more of this if the old hammerhead will leave me alone (wife unit). Don't get me wrong, I worship the ground she walks on, it's just sometimes she asks me for something at the most inopportune moments....

Thanked: 4827Of course my eye goes straight to the Henckels. What models? What design are you thinking for the scales?
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Top is #271, measures 19mm at center. Bottom is #74, almost 21mm.
The scale shape will be your basic style, nothing fancy. Gonna try aluminum spacers again but this time just one interior liner, black with a CA finish. Im gonna try snakewood again (top) and cocobolo (bot) and use wipe on poly for the exterior finish. Probably use some silver domed washers with the snakewood and brass bullseyes for the cocobolo.
Hopefully i can start cutting them out this week.

So will you peen a bit of silver rod in that forward 'pivot hole' on the #74?
How about filling the rear hole, taking that top corner off and having a 'long-tailed' Henckels!
Just as easy!Last edited by sharptonn; 10-10-2016 at 12:33 AM.

Nice job cleaning up those blades Matt. They're looking good and going to be awesome in the scales, nice choice of woods too!

Thanks man.
I might switch out the snakewood for ziricote. I have a matched set of ziricote blocks but they are a bit small. Have to get the templates made first to see if i can squeeze a pattern into them.

Just finished workin on the Red Star. This blade had a bunch of spotty rust on it.
I threw it in Evaporust for a week.
Polished up ok. There are many pits.
You can see the bevel better in this light. I actually got a clean bevel. A few pits are very close but the edge is clean.
I'm curious what these scales are. No odor when warm washed, the have almost a machine cut looking surface.. Took a shine with some Mass..
Lucite?

Could be a plastic called catalin that was used for scales.

There is also galalith which has a milky smell when heated.
