The mineral oil bath is suppose to hydrated them and keep them strong and flexible. That was on the advice of Pixelfixed. He was in the loop when it came to dealing with ivory. I never tested or questioned or researched it any further than than and extended it to bone as well. I suppose when I start playing around with antler I will likely treat its the same.
    Thanks Rez.
I've got um clamped between two hard objects as of now, in case they try to warp, and I can't oil them till I make the repairs.
    But the oil makes sense.!!

    Osteoporosis that hilarious.
I am going to try to oil infuse my dry bone slabs. Some here and some in a different secret laboratory. Hopefully the get to a carve able state.

Talking about bone Rez have you found a good source for it that doesn't require so much prep?

I have. I have 2.5mm to 3mm thick and 30mm wide by 160mm long slabs of buffalo bone. It is fairly fine on the surface and has not been bleached. I order it direct from India. Currently I have quite a bit because I just got a shipment in. It is fairly consistent and most of it is closer to 3mm. That close to where i want it and it preps quite fast. Two passes through the drum sander at 220 and then I do a shape between the bandsaw and the router, 1K grit wet sand and they are ready to carve. The bone does plug up the drum sander paper quite quickly so I am really going through a lot more gum cleaner and paper than I had anticipated. The stuff from India I am very happy with. The stuff I got from the US that also came from India needs some help in order to make it carve-able. I am sure that I can get it rehydrated, it just means in the long run I will always order from India. Shipping is remarkably inexpensive between India and here.

Just finished this Winchester. I straightened the scales on this one a few days age and cleaned up the blade yesterday. Sanded out some very light pitting and it came out nice. Did the blueing with the scales on, like the G&F I did earlier. The bluing goes over the top of the spine and on the front of the toe. The line on the shoulder of the spine was a little uneven but it straightened up with about 30 seconds on the 12k. I don't think the markings on this one were originally painted but I went for it anyway.

Today we were snowed in, so I broke out my newly acquired GB anchor. I'm not doing much to the blade. It's only got a tiny spot that was active rust, and the patina looks great. The horn handles were shot. Bug bitten and more brittle than any I've ever had. Ballistol and steel wool cleaned it up just enough. I think I want to use lignum vitae for the scales, but the piece I had cut out is really warped now. Time will tell how those come out.

Then I decided to play around with some jnats I've had for a while and have not tested. Most seem like decent finishers. The thin kiita farthest right has the most potential IMO.

That's a beautiful chunk of steel prodigy. It seems that you have too many Jnats and not enough time. If you'd like, you can send me that Kiita. You know, to give you a better Jnat to time ratio.

Well between hones, razors, my lathe, and my newest hobby of making alcohol I do seem to not have enough time in a day to do everything I would like. That GB is the before pic, I'll post a recent one later tonight or tomorrow.

I'm singing the Bevel Setting Blues right now with an Mk 10 and a Dorko, both having been stripped of their Fancy Pants and getting a new start......
