I think the small button signifies that the ball will break "curl" to that side when thrown. So if you want it to break right, have the small button on the right. Vise versa for left.
But now it signifies that this is the bottom of the shave brush.Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....

Well Tom here it is thus far. Going on 320 grit those squiggles are not coming out idgit with his power tool effed things up and his scars shall remain.Nothing is fool proof, to a sufficiently talented fool...
