Thanks Shaun. It was tempered steel so still very strong even though I'd taken off a lot of material. I used a dremel and various grinding bits and got down to that shape quite quickly.

Had to look for an appropriate base which was the base for a pot (turned upside down), which holds the pitch that engravers use. Now, I wonder if it will work...so far so good. The sphere is 3" in diameter.
