I thought he said that he didn't scuff it. Maybe a different bonding agent will work.
On the heating and inbedding of the inlay, a small lip would possibly be created around it. Putting a flat iron like attachment on the soldering iron could possibly press that lip down to fold over the edge of the inlay locking it tight and making the inlay flush with the scales..

EDIT: heating something small flat and Teflon coated and pressing it down to lock it in. Perhaps a cheap Teflon pan cut down...

I dunno, MikeT. Me and heat and celluloid don't mix!

Go stand by the mailbox, willya? The Searsasori is 'out for delivery'!

I agree about the heat thing. I don't know about that. I ruined a good set of scales I made once using heat on 'em so I try to stay away from it if possible but sometimes it is useful.

Oh it's all good MikeT. I also put some scales in the oven awhile back but they didn't get ruined. They were warped a little & I placed them on a flat surface with a piece of cardboard in between each piece & put my old anvil on top for awhile & they got straight but I had to sand them back down. I need to experiment more but I may have had a little too much heat on. I was going by a thread I read about fixing warped scales & tried something a little different.

I catch up with this thread at least twice a day - and each time there's at least 4 pages to read - great stuff. I'm just hoping I'll be able to contribute at some time.

By the way, I'm thinking of moving to the US just for a shiny anvil.
My service is good, fast and cheap. Select any two and discount the third.

Its a soldering iron that has a tube attached to it as well as a circular pad. You then attach a hose to the tube and lightly blow air (by mouth) through the heated tube on the iron.

I use it to repair vinyl seats and such. Lets you direct heat right where you want it.
