Actually, I had thought of something similar as you mentioned tape earlier. One for the toolbox!
So I have indeed figured it out. Makes too much sense.......I will experiment and see.
Still have to sand and polish the scales. Size some of Babur's silver collars to it.
Meanwhile some busted parts shall help to experiment."Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Thanked: 4206Tis the season Tom. Wife has a drawer full of em.. I only get to use the table sparingly.
Now you are right that if you get any ca on the tape it would be a problem, so don't. hehe.
The puddle on the wax paper you spread out real real thin and the thickness of the inlay, if the tape is taut will prevent any ca from touching anywhere but the inlay.
Same premise as tamper print lines in packaging..
Try it with a few practice things like washers on targets as I tried to show, and tell me it won't work.
Draw out the washer or penny outline first on the target, then practice dropping the test piece exactly on the mark, and you will see.

Another two cents on this inlay problem.
Not necessarily useful, but a brain fart anyway.
I'm used to work with resins to make lots of things, (including to inflating snake hemipenises for comparative anatomy - no kidding), and I would adopt a completely different procedure to get inlayed scales if I have an inlay, a blade and appropriate scales for the job.
I'd try to built a new set of scales around the inlay, using for that a mold made from the original scales.
I'd cast a mold of the original scales from whatever appropriate (wax, plaster...). When ready, I'd just put the inlay on the botton of cast and apply a very thin coat of "glass" colored resin over it, filling further to the surface of the mold with the same resin (colored phenolic, epoxi), but reinforced with fiberglass tissue.
After curing, just removing them from the mold, cleaning/sanding carefully and applying a layer of finishing resin. The inlay would so be pretty well embedded in the scales.
Maybe worth a try. Thermostable plastics are easy to work with, strong, and can be worked to be very clear and polished.

Thanked: 4206I'm noodling around that twin legged parser as a dremel bit idea in my head.
Really want to try to make some inlayed scales of my own design..
Amber, ivory, brass maybe..
They closed our bowling alley sadly, a few years back and I haven't thrown a frame since. ;(
hehe, Matt said hemopenises
All kidding aside, very neat idea as well!!!Last edited by MikeB52; 10-22-2015 at 03:08 AM.
