Went intentionally with two different pitches, 27 tpi for the thumb and 16 for the fingers simply based on what feels right to me, finer pitch on the thumb side and coarser on the top just drives better in my hand.

Dunno why, but I like what I like.

IIRC, most Sheffields with top and bottom jimps are done the same way. Fine on bottom and more coarse on top.

I used an external thread repair file available from most industrial tool outlets.
I ordered mine from McMaster-Carr online for $12. p.n.#2616A12

Included the link, but I do not know if McMaster delivers to home addresses. Can always use the supplied info and order through NAPA or pepboys etc as well. Or your local tool and die guy must have some. The key with this file is good hardened stock, not some off shore look alike or it would ruin the work I think. I was so worried about chatter or skipping across the tang before the first couple jimps were well defined it was a nervous attempt. My confidence grew with each pull of the file though.
Might even work in the creation of razors before the steel is hardened. Maybe next summer I will test that theory out as well.

Indeed Tom, the very one. I have three of them, one metric, one imperial, and one BPT.
Great to have on hand if you try to save your hardware in the field.

What's the best way to clean the ravages of time (patina/rust etc) out of jimps?

Thanks Mike!! Never thought of them. Steel chequering files are pricey!

A wire brush on a Dremel works well, but for the really ugly stuff a diamond file picks it out and leaves a nice finish.

Small wire brush and a bit of polishing compound...MAAS or similar wash off polish. Dremel wire brush works well. Do not use a brass brush, it can plate the steel brass if there is any acid present.
Low and slow by hand with a toothbrush sized wire brush works best on real gunk. A toothbrush and tooth paste can be a wonder for the whole job!

Darn tootin' they are pricey!!..
Hence my miserly approach to something that was way cheaper, more likely to mess up with it's smaller width, but it worked..
It cuts 7 jimps at a time on the 27 tpi side of that file. 4 on the 16.
