I was laughing like crazy at this exchange and the GF now knows better than to ask when I'm browsing the forum
This thread is brilliant. BUT back to work gents!
I have some hiccups with my acrylic scales.
1) sanded them down to 2000 grit, they just look foggy and not sure if polish mucked them up a bit. Going to try some CrOx, since I have about 3.7x more than I'll use in my lifetime.
2) The dark green I accidentally made looks great, but looks like navy blue on pictures on my phone. Plus none of the neat swirling effect from my poor stirring comes through. Drat.
3) Mixing containers. In my excitement on creating these I lacked the knowledge or foresight to future mixing vessels. I could use crap Solo dipping cups and a scale OR a disposable container with volumetric measurements on it (this kind was included in the kit I bought, but only 3 and they went south faasssst.)
I also tried getting a Morley blade to some shiny perfection, but my sanding wasn't straight and it doesn't look right. I have a pair of these (square point and barber's notch) that I want to get in some green scales. Clover... Irish.... heh. SO, I need to make a couple blocks. One to hold razzer and another to support the sandpaper. I almost cut the tip of my finger off, but for some reason it is impervious to slashing damage. Going to see if Ace has some leftover bits of wood they wouldn't mind parting with on the cheap.

It's been a busy couple weeks for me as well, trying to do more razor stuff than posting about razor stuff! Working on honing a Morley, she's just a little bit tempermental and it's slow going on my 5k... I did try casting some scales sans color. Figuring it would be clear-ish, maybe amber? Attached are also the photos of my "Foggy Greens"
If I got this right, the bottom one is without color. It almost looks like bone. Albeit a very uniform, unstriated(is that even a word?) bone. Of course I used too much and have a lot of hand sanding ahead. Am toying with the idea of trying to make it look like bone, but will have to experiment with my new "stir sticks". I didn't get 1/2 of my mixture into the mold quickly enough and it was solidifying as I was pouring it. 3 minute work time, MY FOOT!
Tried a different type of acrylic and that came out ghost white. Back to the drawing board for glittering scales...

I have my Smooth-On OOMOO*30 silicone mold maker which I got a few days after i looked it all up on the internet. I need to unpin my Marconi, fix the broken scale & make sure they aren't warped before I make my mold. I still need to get the 2 part resin plus the coloring. I will find something that is flat which is the main thing or make a flat pan for which to pour the silicone in to make the mold. The main thing s to make sure the mold is perfectly flat because you don't want to make warped scales. The mold will be able to be used many times. I might make one which will produce 2-3 sets of scales or just one at a time, I haven't decided yet. For all who do this, I will love to see the glittering scales some of us will make.
This mold making product sets up in minutes so that there is not a long waiting time & one can continue with their work as long as they have everything they need. I now need to find & order my resins & coloring.
