Thanked: 4206Great work with the WD paper already Outback, finish is looking nice already!
Very nice walkthrough on the rivet install as well Tom thanks for the great details and pics. That looks way more effective and long lasting than my CA fill job I have done on bad pivot holes in the past. The ones where a nail was used for a few decades and elongated the pivot hole,, those ones.
So you don't think the typical square hole like still in mine necessarily needs to be filled?
I may forego that step then as it wasn't needed on the original assembly and it lasted all those years.
May go with thin inside spacer washers though, if I still have some. Such a heavy blade will need some internal friction to stay open, and may not with that.
Working on the scale test mixes in between coats of varathane on a different razor project I got goin on.
Cheers.

Leave the pivot hole alone on old horn-scaled Sheffields (unless you have to) and NEVER test fit one without doing so with no spacers, whatsoever. The angles ground on the tang are the only thing determining fitment (aside from wonkey scales!). The tang coming in and sending the scales more center is why they work. They are what they are. Just me..
They like the no spacers. How they came~! It took me a while to figure it out?Last edited by sharptonn; 08-13-2015 at 02:40 AM.

Thanked: 4206So I repaired the scales using a mixture of 2 part epoxy and ground up horn hoping the horn would add to the colour and finish.
Left them in a ziplok with a couple tablespoons of neetsfoot oil overnight and here is the results.
The finish is a little more matte than I was hoping for and in my mind there is a lack of horn 'grain' which I tried to mimic with various sandpaper strokes, but I'm not unhappy with the results.
So on to wedge work and maybe reassembly over the weekend.
Happy Saturday men, enjoy your respective pursuits and take time to recharge!
Cheers.
edit; will try to take outside pictures of the finished product those pics are kinda dark, sorry.Last edited by MikeB52; 08-15-2015 at 04:03 PM.

Looks good, Mike. I use really rough stuff to try and emulate the grain, like 100 grit. Few long, hard strokes, then some steel wool to smooth it out.
About done as much as I want to on my blade. Think I will go through my pile-o-scales to look for any other options.

Thanked: 4206Just got back from an afternoon outing with the missez and wow Tom. Looks fantastic!
The smile and point are perfect on that blade.
Nice work man.
After seeing my pics I'm going to drop back to the 100 grit for a few swipes. Not quite 'there' yet.
Thanks for the tip."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."

Well, take your time, Mike. I went through my pile of scales and, aside from shortening these old FBU scales or one of several big bakelite sets I have, nothing quite fit this blade except this set. Problem is the curve of the scales has to be right to accommodate the blade width. Most I have are are simply too wide, too narrow, or the wrong curvature/pin spacing.. These are from an old W&B wedge which a member here reproduced several years ago. As he showed his remarkable job, I asked for the old scales in a jesting manner.
He actually sent them to me....from Russia, I think! I have not seen him around since then, and have forgotten his forum name. I hope I can somehow remember.
So, since I MUST finish and use them, I think with the proper wedge, they should fit just great.
I fixed 3 huge bug bites a long while back, but need to work on delamination on the tips and backsides.
Gonna take a week or two!
