Thanked: 101Nice Rubicon eTom.....My POTD on Sat. was a very nice short NW cob stoked with 1Q. Went to the tobacco shop after my wife got home and got a couple goodies while there. I picked up a mini cob and a basket briar smallish in size. Also got an Oz. of "Black Knight" (black Cavendish blend) and an Oz. of "Captain's Choice" (Cavendish ala "Captain Black"). Funny thing is the Captain's Choice is one I tried, but was not fond of and passed it on to a stellar member here. Well the ol gal at the shop tricked me and said smell the Captain's Choice and that was all it took and I was off! I forgot totally that I had tried it and got the Oz. Also got another pipe tool for a spare. Well I get home and lo and behold I remember I HAD tried the Captain's Choice and was a little bummed out by my foolishness...........I proceeded to load the mini cob with Captain's Choice for a smoke. Realize my fingers won't fit the bowl (11.5 wedding band) so I get a spent .357 mag shell and it worked a treat! Tamped nicely and packed it in. Went on the porch and lit into it and let me tell you....Totally different this go around! I will be getting more. It hit the underside of my tongue with the sweet and it had a nice smoky flavor as well. The aftertaste was almost a plum/mulberry taste. Very neat. I finished up and went to pick the ash and unburned out and knocked a hole through the pith bottom of the pipe!!!!! I Already have thought to modify an older MM full length I have with a piece of dowel rod and glue so I thought what better to do it with than a 2 dollar pipe? I had some 3/8 hardwood dowel leftover from making plugs for my shotguns so I used some of it. Cut about a 1 inch piece and dabbed a bit of wood glue on it and press fit it in with my bench vice and a block of wood. It was already a pretty tight friction fit with the dowel by itself. The glue was only an extra insurance. Next day (yesterday) I cut the excess dowel off with a hacksaw then knocked it down with a rat tail bastard file, finishing up with a mill bastard. It is smooth and looks like it grew there! That little pipe smokes pretty good. OTOH the basket Italian Spitfire pipe I got a few months back turned out to be a bad pipe.....Hot and wet smokes, with leaking around the stem. No good. I had already had to do a few things with it and it still didn't help. It is in the junk drawer for now...
