Of the second, i cannot say for sure. Do you know where the pipe is made?
I'm a member of Finnish pipe club and Nordisk tabakskollegium. They have lots of info on old pipes. Checked quickly their sites but no help this time. However, i will keep on asking.
I know that carvers here (in Finland) used to make pipes of various woods. Birch burl was most common material and your pipe looks like that. I have a mug made of birch burl and it looks very much the same. Also walnut, apple, maple and cherrywood were common materials for pipes.
That is very nice pattern and it surely looks like it was made of burl of some light colored wood.

That pipe(second pic.) is my first. I bought it in about 1987.
The maker is unknown, somebody from villages near Minsk, Belarus.
The pipe made from Curly Birch (Betula pendula, Carelica).
Very beautiful wood and bad for making pipes. At that time I knew nothing about pipes.

Thanks. I posted a link of this thread to the pipe site to pipe guild of Finland. Most gents there thought that it is made of birch burl. Not so bad guess.
