I would advise you to go to a local gun shop with their own range, that rents handguns, and shoot a Glock. Try a model G-23 in .40 caliber and go with that if you can handle the recoil. If it seems too stiff go with a 8mm Glock.
Sig and Springfield make great guns. If you want another one later ...... happens to some of us ..... get a 1911 Colt ..... or one of the many very good semi autos in the 1911 style. Just try the Glock first. There is a reason why most LEOs carry them ..... even if they buy their own.

Thanked: 32I was once in a gun store when someone started saying something about racking the slide on his pump action to scare off a home invader. The salesman(Iraq War Vet) looked at me and said, "No bad guy breaking into my home will ever hear me racking the slide"
I concur with try before you buy. All the guns you listed are well-regarded, Glock, Springfield XDm, and Sig SP2022. The Sig is going to have a different trigger double-action/single action meaning long DA first pull, short SA pulls on subsequent shots. Something to consider.
Also, there is nothing wrong with 9mm given the quality of modern hollow-point ammunition for home defense.Last edited by wrxguyusa; 01-02-2013 at 05:31 AM.

There is a gun forum called The Firing Line Forum. If you are a registered member you can participate in the buy/sell/trade forum and I don't think there is any minimum post requirement. I only had a few when I sold a S&W 357 revolver.
I am in FL and I did it FTF (face to face) You can also do it through the LGS (local gun shop) with both yours and their LGS fulfilling the FFL requirements. Since you live in NJ , I used to, I would check out the local laws in your town and in the state. They may have more stringent regulations than other states.
You can also do Gunbroker , sort of an ebay for guns. Same thing, through your FFL guy to the buyer's FFL guy. Like ebay you can check completed items for ballpark figures on current market conditions.

I think you misunderstood me why I said people start running when they hear the slide racking, it wasn't to scare anybody off was being made ready so that he could meet his maker.Just sayin.............. the sound gives him a head start if they're smart

Look at Rock Island Armory, made by Armscor in the Phillipines. Not bad at all for the money, and they seem to shoot pretty well. Not as good as my Kimber, but combat-accurate, for sure. I consider it to be about the cheapest 1911 that's still worth having. Very spartan finish, but oddly attractive to me, for that same reason.
There's also the Taurus 1911 for a bit more. Haven't tried one, but they look really nice for the money.

I find that there are numerous choices in DA/SA semi-auto pistols. For accurate target shooting and competition, I believe the 1911 is the ideal platform to learn the proper grip with, which is so important, and the single-action trigger offers the best and fastest trigger action possible. Every other pistol design requires some adaptation of that grip and the triggers are something lesser. It's been argued that defensive pistol triggers are designed with the gross motor skills associated with stress in mind, however, there were many Marines at Iwo Jima under such stress and never had a serious issue with the finer nature of a 1911 single-action trigger.
For home defense, a shotgun is good to have, but somewhat limited in application. Rule #1 is HAVE A GUN, but I wouldn't go buy a shotgun and not have anything else. It's just not an either/or question for me; I like to have a range of options, so to speak... If I was going to run out and buy my "first gun" all over again, it would be something I could best afford with the best trigger and natural pointing grip angle that I could find such as an S&W M&P in .45 ACP, in dark earth with contrasting black grip and two extra mags (in case anyone reading had a sudden overwhelming desire to get me one)...
