I suggest that you go back and re-watch Glen's video where he tells that while you can use tape to protect a spine while setting a Hard Bevel, there is NO NEED TO USE TAPE TO REFRESH AN EDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The #1 thing about Glen is that he doesn't 'Speculate' he does the research and then puts it to the test and therefore when he posts he has the proof.

I've used the tape for setting a bevel and no tape to refresh many times and I can say that Glen is telling the truth as It Does Work!

His point is . It doesnt matter. If you are honing for yourself, go wild ride without tape.
Honing for others. Tape because I aint scratching your spine and replacing your straight.
Take you car to the dealership, they always put down a Paper floor mat, So you cant blame them for oily car floor. Same Idea.
If I scratch your bevel I can buff it out an nobodys none the wiser. Grind the heel or set an uneven bevel it shows for days a mile away.
Lots of guys here can get to scary sharp. Getting there and keeping the razor looking pretty is the unspoken other half of the job.

I have recently revisited one of my old WB Near Wedge razors. What I blindly did before was to hone this razor with 2 layers of tape just well because that was I thought would be good. It shaved OK with this treatment and never gave it much thought then one day I took a caliper to it and found that the actual bevel angle was pushing almost 22 degrees. So I did a reset without tape and now even without tape the angle is 19 and change on the upper limit of an optimal edge angle for a razor. So I found that this angle did shave quite a bit better and my WB is not much worse for wear for that matter. Just want to point out that sometimes you have to lose the tape if you keep honing some razors with tape you may not get what your looking for. So i would say tape when you can but don't be bogged down with that idea for every razor check to see if you are getting a good result by doing so. I have been checking more of my vintage razors in this regard and you may be surprised what you find.

But here we go..... The spine is your guide. The thicker your spine is in relation to the width of your blade the larger the included angle is.

Adding tape makes your spine thicker.

He THOUGHT 2 layers of tape put 22degrees of steel on hone.
When measured only 19 degrees of steel on hone.
So removing tape was a side benefit. the true angle was 19 degrees just never measured.
If you layed a flat piece of steel on a hone 0 degrees
45 degree angle is a tall ole bevel.
