I was gifted this Puma yesterday and it was in really good shape until I looked at the edge with magnification....

Chips and pits! I spent some time with the 1K and of course finished it out with others but the 1K did most of the work and so deserves the hone of the day award.

I finally honed up a handful of antique store and ebay buys from about a month ago. Seemed a waste not to have them in the shaving rotation.

Speaking of 1K & bevel setting, are there other tests instead of skimming off arm hairs? I'm so old that my are hair has gone south and is therefor useless for such a test.
Everyone stresses how critical the bevel set is to a successful end result that I need other tests to tell me when to move to the 4K. Learner

Welcome to the wimpy hair club.

i was using a 50X scope and could see many imperfections that didn't feel bad while cutting arm hair or on my thumb pad.

Optics are your best friend on that one. There are a couple of threads with great pictures also, here's one http://straightrazorpalace.com/honin...ggestions.html

I aree, Rezdog. Looking at an edge through 60x shows the smallest flaws that still need to be attended to. If I can still see a line of light when looking at the edge during 1K
work my feeling is that I haven't yet done enough. Am I right or wrong?

When you get it exactly right the very apex should be almost impossible to see. When it is not there yet it will a white line of intermittent lines and sparkles. Setting the bevel is the only time that I look almost straight down on the apex.

Thanks agin Rezdog; it's nice to have guidance to help with the long learning process and it's comforting to know that my intuitive thinking was right.
