Hairlines near or on the spine can be surface cracks due to heat treat or possibly even from a drop. Of course I have no idea what the depth of your one is.
Sometimes lightly tapping the spine may give you an idea from the sound. I had an American razor that rang like a bell in spite of a long hairline on the side of the spine that crossed over the spine to the other side.Last edited by onimaru55; 06-18-2017 at 10:26 AM.

The crack is hardly visible . I've seen a few and caused a few but never seen one this fine.
Taking what you said into consideration , I would think it is a surface crack.
I did just tap a spoon along the spine. The tang/spine/crack area has no resonance but the toe end /crack free, gives off a ring..
What does that me? I have no clue? Other than razors can be used as musical instruments haha

Sounds like you have what they call, a cold shot, not a crack. Its just a spot where the metal didn't come together during the forging process.
I've got a blade that has one just under spine, running the length of the blade, thru the stabilizer, stopping in the stamp mark on the tang.
Its fine.! [emoji6]Mike

Nothing like finishing a razor, all done, then turning around and ever so slightly dinging the absolute center of the blade, causing a small micro-chip to appear...which means back to square one, get that chip out...sigh.
Well, whistle while you work as the saying goes, guess this about sums up my feelings....

Just a pretty quick touchup for this one getting ready to be sold off, fresh bevel then 4/8K midwork and finished off on a Shinden Asagi with a DN 1200 slurry then tomo slurry and stropped on flax linen and cordovan.

The 6/8 Dovo on Ohzuku ended up being very sharp but the shave caused irritation. I couldn't see any microchips or anything under the scope. This was only the second time I have used the stone and the gentleman that sold it told me it will take time to tame it. Since I am experimenting I thought what about trying an Escher (B/G). Gave it around 50 x strokes with dilution and finished on thin slurry. Shave was excellent. BBS and absolutely no sting from alum.

A nice surprise in today a vintage Sheffield George Butler & Co quarter hollow it's never been honed didn't even have a bevel, I will say it took a superb edge two layers of tape delivered a beautiful even bevel from Toe to heel.

Thanked: 104My two Japanese natural stones an Ozuku Asagi and a Wakasa.
The Ozuku is at the top and is wet revealing the Asagi colour, whilst the Wakasa at the bottom is a very hard stone, and I don't think it is visible in the photo but has 'Goma' visible. It is not toxic or problematical at all, just an indicator of how hard this stone is. Absolutely no feedback at all from them, this Wakasa provided a lovely edge on a C 135 Thiers Issard 7/8. The Asagi is still a lovely final stone and it's edge is better than a 12k synthetic edge as far as keenness goes. Of the two the Wakasa gives a little more feedback than the Ozuku, but never the less provides a surprisingly crisp finish to the edge. Both of these stones are double sided, so I haven't sealed the bottom of either, however I did use multiple coats of shellac to seal the sides. Overall, I am very happy with my two purchases. They are both full sized and each weighs more than 1.5kg. My son has laid claim to them should I fall off the perch!
