Thread: Cast iron?

I have a 12" cast iron skillet I bought from Amazon Basic, pretty good quality! I've had it about a month and used it 4-5 times. Works great so far. I seasoned it with flax seed oil, in the oven about 2 hours at 350 then let cool. Cleaned with hot water/steam, so far minimal sticking of food. Because it's new I'm seasoning it every time I use it, to build up a good base layer. So.... not an antique but still a good pan! My daughter doesn't like it because its "so heavy!" but I like it and really like the results when I use it.

Thanked: 250Welcome on board to the best cookware made jimdnp. Keep working on the seasoning of that skillet and don't give up. My big #10 Wagner took over a year to re-season with bacon grease and raw fried hash browns to get it where I want.

Thanked: 25I just made some cornbread in my cast iron grill, mixed it with buttermilk to go with pinto beans with a hambone cooked for several hours on the stove. The cast iron skillet was my great grandmothers from the 1880s. That is one skillet that will never be replaced.

I agree completely with lloydrm!! Dlb1963, any way you could post a picture of your grandmother's 1880s skillet? That would be a treat, I'd enjoy admiring it!!

I forgot to add, the first meal I made in this skillet was bacon and hashbrowns! I think that's a sort of tradition for new cast iron! Many of the cast iron seasoning videos I've seen suggest bacon grease for seasoning and I agree!!

After what I consider a success with making chocolate chip bars in my cast iron skillet I decided to give Pumpkin Bars a go.
I learned from the chip bars that I should probably use two 10" skillets as the centers were a little on the 'wet side'. So------------------
Batter made and divided between two oiled skillets;
After 25 - 30 minutes in the oven (boy was it crowded);
Out of the pans and some Cheesecake Frosting (I hope OCD will forgive my lack of skilled application of the frosting)
I'll post the recipes for the bars and frosting in The Recipe BoxOur house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.
