Here is the recipe I used.
2 lbs chuck steak cubed
4 calves kidneys
3 tablespoons oil
3 onions finely chopped
2 tablespoons flour
1 1/2 cups beef broth
1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshely ground black pepper
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 bay leaf
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon milk
Short crust pastry:
1 1/4 cups sifted all purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons butter cut into smkall pieces
3 tablespoons margarine
3 tablespoons cold water
Trim beef to remove all fat. Chop kindeys into small pieces. Brown beef and kindeys in hot oil. Add onions and cook 5 minutes. Stir in flour and add the beef broth gradually. Season wth salt and pepper. Add worcestershire sauce and bay leaf. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours until beef is tender. Transfer to deep 10" pie dish. Top with pastry, cut slits to let steam escape. Brush pastry with egg yolk and milk glaze. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
To make pastry, sift flour into a bowl. Add salt and butter and blend with fingertips. When butter is the size of small peal, blend in margarine, Stir in cold water with a fork adding 2 tablespoons, then 1 tablespoon. Form dough into a ball. Wrap in wax paper and chill 20 minutes. Roll pastry on floured board to fit pie plate.
There you go. I can't tell you how accurate to what others remember, but I really liked it.

Thanked: 1587Steak and Kidney pie has always been a great tradition in my family. Your recipe looks nice.
Another great favourite in our house is corned beef. Get a 1.5 - 2kg piece of corned silverside or topside, rinse off and pat dry with paper towel. Put meat in an oven roasting bag with a small amount of flour and shake to cover meat evenly (tie the top of the bag first!).
Cook meat in bag in the oven at around 180 degrees C for around 40 minutes per 500g. Adjust accordingly for your oven.
I like to make boiled potatoes, corn, cabbage and a white sauce (bechemal minus the eggs) to go with it.
James.

Excellent, though to be honest I prefer the Snake & Pygmy pudding myself.

I loved meat pies when I was in the UK, I'm not sure why they never caught on in the US. It seems like it would be right up our alley. Well, we have pot pies, but it's not the same.
I like steak and ale pie the most, and those small pork pies.
