Shave of the Day 22 Jan 2013
Location: Long Island, NY USA
Razor: C-MON Blackie (circa mid 1950's)
Brush: Muhle Silvertip
Prep: Hot shower with Ogallala Bay Rum soap
Lather: Ogallala Bay Rum shaving soap
Astringent/AS: Ogallala Bay Rum Aftershave Pre Shave Skin Toner
Cologne: Ogallala Bay Rum
Deodorant: Ogallala Bay Rum(see a trend here?)
I just got my grandfather's razor back from the restorer and couldn't wait to test drive it.
This razor was used by both my Grandfather ("Charlie the Barber") and my uncle/godfather before it came to me.
In the end we, (that is, the restorer, Bob Keyes from the great state of Tennessee, and I) decided to keep it as original as possible, hence the small cracks at the pivot pin which were there originally. I'm sure you'll agree that Bob did a magnificent job with it. There may be other stuff out there that's fancier, but I bet none is more special to their owner.Last edited by Peter57; 01-23-2013 at 05:17 PM.

Prep: Hot shower; face washed with leaf-shaped soap from decent hotel.
Pre-Shave: Truefitt & Hill Pre-Shave Oil, well massaged
Cream: Santa Maria Novella Crema da Barba, 10 drops of glycerin.
Razor: Dovo Best Quality 1/2 Hollow 5/8
Strop: steer hide -- 20 laps on split side; 50 laps on grain side.
Post: Acqua di Parma after shave balm
Results: 2 pass shave (wtg and atg, but for mustache and chin, which got xtg), indistinguishable from regular old shaves from old cartridge (FusionMachLaserLubricatedLightIceGenuineDraft ...)
Developments: much improved xtg results on mustache and chin, the parts where I've yet to achieve against the grain passes. I can easily go atg on the soul patch area, but have yet to find an atg path on the upper part of my chin or mustache (the fool's pass scenario). I would have to rub these areas against the grain to notice any difference from prior cartridge shaves -- no differences are visible. I've solved one problem area completely: the left side under my chin. I now have to work on an area on the left side of my neck where to go against the grain, I'd have to go east to west across my tendon-y, multi-hollowed pencil neck.
Cheers,
Jack

Hot shower prep
Soap: Rose of Bulgaria
Mug: Shave set NOS, ala junk shop
Brush: ” Silvertip
Razor: Black Beauty by Gillette
Blade: Personna Lab.
Aftershock: alum block
Splash: HESS “Rose Face Lotion”
Today: Sunny and a mild -26ºC. The Shave. Close and cleaned in two lathered multi passes that I use to scrub the whiskers from my face. The ROSE of Bulgaria is a lathering wonder. The dry weather here requires a very moist lather to render any protection to my skin. I have had this shave set for a few years as a decoration and thought I would try the brush..very soft and a real lather eater due to it having been seldom used before.
The fun of trying things makes the day go a bit better and quicker

Well my Joseph Rodgers finally came in... looks like a nice bevel on it also... might shave with it and see where it is before playing with the stones.
Shaving with facial hair is like a golfcourse. It's a challenge of rough and fairways. You are the skilled greenskeeper of your face?
