re: Packwood in bone pants:
1. Watch for a bent spine!!!
2. Be sure your scales are very, very, close the the same thickness...flex can be a b%&h
3. Bone is a bit hygroscopic and a soaked scale may not give an accurate judgement of its curvature. Perhaps dry them overnight before pinning.
4. After 1K grit, toothpaste makes a nice lustrous finish on bone. Not bling shiny.
5. Watch for the slightest bending of pins
6.Back to the hones.
JMO, YMMV

I don't think many Packwoods had the best geometry, Richard. FME!
We must remember that old Packwood was mostly promoting his celebrated strops.
I attribute a lot of the wonkeyness of Packwoods to likely being made in the cottage industry, the user, and the obvious (and mandatory) presence of the Packwood Strop!
Searching the old guy out is easy here.
Some really good old threads!Last edited by sharptonn; 12-11-2017 at 05:22 AM.

I shortened the scales on the Wosty and pinned it up. I only cleaned the blade up a little with some Simichrome (I love that stuff), because I love the etch. There's some patina but you know, I've developed some patina myself at this point in life.
This is before honing. The blade has a slight bow to it, which made honing a pain in the butt. I am about to try a first shave it with.

Thanks! It turns out to be a great shaver too! I had limited time this morning because of having to pick someone up, and I don't usually like to rush with a straight (of course) but it was so good that I got a pleasant perfect shave anyway.
Feels much more like a wedge than I expected but that makes sense given the grind.
I didn't put that ugly mark in the end -- that was there when it left the works, I think.

Not uncommon to see funky grobs on the old Sheffies. I reckon they could not see up there!
Thanks for leaving that alone!

I need a scale stretcher
Have a look at these scales:
Notice anything peculiar about them scales? Do they look a little... petite? wee and delicate? shrunken? The toe of the blade goes right into the wedge.
I think I need one of these, but for scales:
