Thanked: 4826Funny, my mind went to all the possibilities of inlays too. If I did not have to live in the city, I would be jealous of all the stores at hand. Go for it.

If it is as in most cases, some customer has already payed for that stuff on the shelves, Andrew!
Open season if the boss don't care? I have given employees lots of things from here.
I do prefer they ask.
I might want to do something with that some day!

Thanked: 2284We wont miss 2 feet of pvc, that's for sure. We have so much scrap at the shop, it's unreal. Composite deck would work too, and someone feels the need to keep every 2 foot drop off of that at the shop as well.
It either gets thrown out, or used....... maybe by me.Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....

Thanked: 315Andrew, I've been thinking about those silicone molds as well for scales. I don't have the workspace or the need for enough scales to justify spending the money though. It covered a fun project. What do you think would be the best way of getting a flat/even mold? Glue the original to a flat piece of wood and press that into the mold?

Thanked: 2284At this point I'm just going to pour rectangular blanks, 6.5" x 2.25" and however thick I want. Probably somewhere around an 1/8 inch. I literally just whipped up some moulds on my lunch break from PVC board.

Thanked: 315Okay, so you going to try making blanks first. That's cool. I thought you were talking about making scale impressions.
That should be fun experimenting with different colors. Since your pouring it yourself you don't have to make an oversized 6x4x2 block just to realize it didn't turn out how you want when it cures! I'm sure this will result in some interesting handles as well.

hehehe, I get a kick out of seeing you talk in inches since I so often hear of America's ANTIQUATED methods of measuring.
I was working with MikeB52 on a project and asked if he wanted the measurements in inches or metric. He replied that it didn't matter as he was 'Bi-Lingual'.
It really isn't surprising as years ago we were tent camping in Kamloop while the kids attended a Black Elk hockey clinic. The couple next door had kids about the same age and we got to know each other a bit. The first thing the guy said was not to purchase wood as he would bring home scrap from the construction project he was working on. The first day he pulled up with a ton of scrap 2x4's and 2x6's and he called the that. I said that I thought Canada used metric and he said that all of his blueprints were in feet and inches.
One day he came home quite a bit earlier than usual and I asked if all was well and he said yea but the there was a big hockey game that afternoon the he was driving to see. I asked what the foreman was going to say when he found out that he'd snuck out for a hockey game. He replied "I am the foreman"Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 4826The only construction projects that I. Have worked on in metric we’re government buildings. You just swap out your regular tape for a metric one for that job. On the water it is still nautical miles too.
