I cant for the life of me figure out how you manage to sand and polish these so well. I always end up with rust pits somewhere. Nice job Mike!

Thanked: 4827One of the things that amazes me about Toms collection, other than the collection, is how much time he must have spent finding all the super cool matching sets of scales. I suspect Tom has a lot of time invested, cruising the internet and horse trading.

Their there ,Jerry. The play of lights in the light box, helps hide things. But they are small and faint, and can be seen, when in hand. Hey..it is over a hundred years old, and definitely not NOS. so it'd better have some flaws, eh.!
Lots of rubbing bro. Lots of rubbing
Hand polishing guaranteed to keep those crisp lines, buffer rounds them off, typically. I'm in no rush.. .Mike

So, a light trick. I see how it is. But you still sand much better than me bro. My hands cant take as much as you manage to do.

Trust me, my hands, arms, shoulders, aren't anything, in comparison to what they were, just a few years back. I just pick a different pace, now.

Being at home during the Blizzard outside I figured I put the time to good use. Dug 3 out of the to-do drawer. Kept them original including the collars. Cleaned them up and had to reshape the edges on a couple. Heal work and a lot of rubbing. Now they will need some time on the hones later.
#1: Leavey's Leader, Northern N.Y.B.S.Co, Made in Germany.
The scales really looks like bone and still do but found them to be plastic.
#2: Manganese Steel, C.F. Schwartz & Co. Hamburg Germany.
Hard rubber scales were greenish brown, but after some scrubbing and polishing, they now are black and shiny. 4/8 razor that had serious heal and edge issues.
#3: All I can say for a name is what is stamped on the blade as it has a crosshatch across the tang on both sides. I can see the numbers 173 and The last letters of the word Germany but that's it,
Non-Plus Ultra, Hollow Ground, Germany.
If anyone knows more about this one please let me know.

I bought a few lots a while back. I've found some hidden gems. The Mappin 75 Cent that Outback just fixed up was in one. I believe that the Reynolds humpback rattler that Rezdog carved the scales for was in the same lot.
