I would only be spending an extra $38 so I’m gonna go for a full send and just go for it. Plus she’ll be the purdyest Duck this side of the Mississippi.

While I respect your wise words outback, a man will never know his limitations if he doesn't try. I had never done gold leafing before, and I was able to put 24k gold on one of my strops and I was super pleased with how it turned out. I just got off nights so when I wake up in the afternoon I will post a new thread to document the process. Whether it be an utter failure or a thing of beauty, someone will learn something for sure.

Thanked: 4828So if you look at the total scale thickness and add the liner thickness to the clear acrylic thickness it will show you how thick your build up will be. If you are looking at getting the bolsters to fit, then the scale thickness must remain the same. I have not looked at the sheets of laminated abalone before, but the mother of pearl ones are available in less than 1mm. It it is a plausible task. The other thing is glue, because if they are not laminated fully they will get stuff in between. There are epoxys out there that are water clear..
P.S.

The abalone sheets are .2mm thick, or 1/128ths of an inch thick. So they would change the thickness by a very small amount. As far as the glue goes I have been thinking epoxy for the liners. It needs to be dead nuts clear. and flexible to bend with the scales. These aren't going to be my first scales or anything but definitely going to test my detail work for sure. Thanks so much for your replies guys means a lot.

Been a productive weekend. Finished the scale repairs on my W&B barbers notch and got it soaking while making some progress on saving the original collars. Hoping to make some headway on making a tool to get the dents out of the collars. Also found the JaNorton 4k/8k fun challenge thread from 2012, good stuff in there. So, I worked on improving my honing. Reworked my Genco that I've used before and also got my Warranted Cast Steel blade honed up. Got my first shave with it today, I think I like the heavier grinds. Not certain about the french point - nice around the tight areas, but almost got me a couple of times. One of the best shaves to date, almost no pressure on the skin and the three days growth just jumped off my face . Since I haven't used this blade before, I'm not sure if it was the blade/grind or the extra time and attention I put into the honing. I'll see if my honing improved with the Genco. Looking forward to getting my near wedge Packwood up and running.
Speaking of the Packwood, I've got a plan for the new scales and hope you all can get me some info. While sifting through the Packwood threads, I came across post 4 in this thread - https://sharprazorpalace.com/razors/...stubtails.html The blades in the photos are absolute duplicates of my blade. So, now I know what the original scales looked like. I was hoping to get a scan or tracing of the scales, but it looks like that member hasn't posted in over a year . If anyone has another of these blades, a scan with a ruler or tracing would be a big help. Based on the history of Mr. Packwood (a bit of a self promoter) I'm leaning towards some tortoise shell Kirinite in the shape of the originals, probably with a lead wedge.
