Perhaps I'm late to the party but have you ever posted pictures of how you are doing the looking (mining)? I for one would love to see.
Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 4827I have posted quite a bit of stuff in the thread http://straightrazorpalace.com/hones...ver-there.html other than that there is not a lot to it.

Spent some time the last few days cleaning up this Greaves. I didn't get too aggressive with it, wanted to keep it's age. I didn't unpin it so I could keep the original pins and scales. There is some light patina on the blade and the scales are in great shape considering their age. No cracks, just a couple little divots. I hand polished using 2.5 micron diamond compound on a small piece of linen hose scrap, works great. It's a long blade at over 3.25 inches, going to have to be careful shaving with this one once it's honed! It's taking a soak in neetsfoot oil for the night.

Also been cleaning up an Illinois horsehide #6452 strop. I bought it very cheap just for the hanger hardware, the strop looked trashed but when it arrived I thought I'd try to have a go at resurfacing the leather. Even though it's not really recommended (and at my own risk) I sanded the leather to get to a decent surface. I sanded all the way up to 2000 grit, then rubbed and rubbed with a slightly damp cloth then added a drop of neetsfoot oil and rubbed a bunch more. I'm confident there are no stray bits of sand in the leather and it looks to be a great surface now. I'll try stropping and do a bunch of checks of the edge under magnification to be sure all is well. I used linen fire hose and sealed the ends and the hole with CA.
