Got started on a Hargreaves, Smith & Co. Imperial Razor with a rattler grind. It could pretty easily be shined up nice and sparkling because there's no pits or rust (and I am a sucker for shiny objects), but this one has such deep, even patina that I'm leaving it like this. Plus, there is a faint etch in the blade surface "Hargreaves, Smith & Co. Celebrated Concave" and I don't want to risk losing that. So, just making some new horn scales for it. Just got them roughed out and hope it continue on them this weekend, gonna use Geezer's half scissor method!

    Nice!
I might advise to just oiling and using it.
Anything you seal it with will be popping off if you use it.
    Something light should be best?

I plan on using walnut oil after planing it flat, you are right- I will avoid heavy finishes like varnish or lacquer.

Besides, I consider that a piece of American history and heritage
Lots of that type of razors had blued spines and noses!
    Have no idea about those?

I have an old P <3 Ford that was fairly rusty. I gave it a quick going over with 000 and oil and then 600 wet. Then tossed it in the vibratory tumbler for a few days.

I wrapped it up in some paper towel, then got it wet with Jax steel blackener.

We have a couple of wood benches at work that came unfinished. She decided that they should look pretty. The next week they looked fine and I put on equipment with plastic covers on them. The covers were scratched by the coating...

Yes. I suspect it is quite old. Early 18's I suspect. I understand the mark goes back into the 17's but clearly this one was much later than that. I will nest it into a plain set of bone scales with a matte finish.
