    Nevet heard that before.
But it's a prime candidate for obtaining a clean edge and leaving some pits.JMO

I am resigned to leaving some of the large pits on the blade, but would like sand off the splotchy areas. There is some deep pitting on the shank that will have to stay, also.

Some splotchy piting. Is this what is referred to as Devil's spit?

On a recently acquired razor, I began some clean up...part way through I decided to hone it and see how it honed and shaved. It shaved beautifully. I kind of forgot the cleanup because now I had a razor. Sure, if you look at the darker specks under a loupe they look like the Grand Canyon. At some point I think it is more Devil's Slobber rather than spit.

If it shaves well, good job sir!
After that, it' s personal preference. Personally, I find that liquid rust treatment, evaporust, to be good at cleaning out the discoloration and spit left behind without having to remove all the surrounding metal. Leaves a matte gray finish behind that comes off with 1k paper or higher.
Don't like to leave any rust myself, due to it's insidious nature..
    How bout a pic??
    Cheers!

    Few pages late, too.
Amber is kinda sensitive to mineral spirits and organic solvents (gasoline, naphta, acetone, alcohol, glicerin, methil cyanide, ether, chloroform...)
    Besides "fossilized", it's still resin.

I'll admit that a photo can be misleading. This is kind of like those before and after pics in magazines for a wonder cream. It is about the lighting
I thought about using Vaporust but I have never used it and didn't want to risk some patina. Happily, the edge took very little work to expose clean steel.
