I challenge all of my pro gun friends at SRP to take a non gunner to the range sometime this summer, make an investment with that first box of shells and get ready to have a great day with a new friend.
Well and I would except there's no consarned ammo!

But my point was that banning machine guns did not eliminate gun violence. It didn't even make a dent in it.
Perhaps the true reason for their infrequency of use is that they aren't that convenient to use in crime. It's a lot tougher to walk up to a liquor store hiding an assault rifle than it is with a handgun. Anyway, point taken.

It occurred to me, and I'd be interested in hearing thoughts (and further) that any idiot can have a baby, nearly any adult idiot can buy a gun, but we make people take classes and tests to drive a car. What about mandatory licensing to get firearms? The reason I think of it is that my cousin has taken MANY extra courses in firearm safety, shooting courses, live fire drills, etc. What frightens me is that he and his once-fragile wife are better trained than the majority of police officers, and probably 90% of the gun-owning public.
I realize (but am rather unfamiliar with) that there are some steps that need to be taken- the aforementioned blue card? I'm pretty sure that all that is is a check that you're not a felon, though. Right? What I might propose is a mandatory course/test that might need to be renewed every couple of decades, much like a driver's license. They'd have to be free classes in order to not violate the 2nd amendment, and probably end up in the cost of any guns that ended up being bought, but it's an interesting thought. I'm rather sure it won't be terribly popular here.
Won't do anything to stop illegal activities, obviously, but it's honestly not only the criminals that frighten me. What do you guys feel about that? On my few trips to gun ranges, I've seen a couple of idiots that scared the bejeezus out of me. It's those guys I don't want to have guns...

In the state of Florida and I imagine in all that allow concealed carry you have to go to a certified instructor for classes in the safe handling of firearms including firing a handgun at a licensed target range. That is to receive a concealed carry permit. All of that is not required to purchase a handgun. There are some hoops to jump through for that as well but not as complicated or as stringent.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I was lucky enough to snag three 200 round Remington .233 value packs at Wally World last week.

I haven't seen a box of .45 ACP around here in about 2 months. I wanted to shoot my Kimber so bad today, so I broke down and used some of my defense ammo for target practice.

    Defense ammo? What is that?

I don't see the gun issue as a political one. I am a Democrat but I love firearms. I have said it before. I believe we should be able to do anything we want as long as we don't interfere with anyone else's life, liberty or pursuit of happiness. The problem is that people get guns and then go and kill innocent people. It seems to happen quite frequently. Kids in schools on rampages are a very frightening thought for a parent who has kids in college across the country.

Actually, it happens quite infrequently. More kids die in swimming pools each year than die from guns.

I have always liked the thought of owning a gun but never really tried acting on it. For the first time in my life a couple weeks back I went with a friend to his gun club. It's a private club with a limited membership and lies on about 80 acres of land. We shot lots of pistols and ended it up with some trap. I had a BLAST no pun intended. Because of that, it pretty much kickstarted my mind into a gun buying phase. I'm hopefully going tomorrow to get my "blue card" (to buy a pistol). If republicans want liberals to embrace gun ownership then show them the benefits outside of self defense- sport, fun, engineering, etc.

As for ammo shortage I can definitely buy the 'manufactured shortage' argument, but I personally have no basis for any explanation. Kind of sucks for everyone really, and I do hope HR 45 and any other liberal anti-gun laws do not pass. I'm gonna need some ammo soon (for the range- because I just like to shoot)!

When I lived in RI I used to go to the AFS (American Firearms School) just over the border into MA. Keep in mind that with a RI permit, you may not stop in MA with a gun in your car, except AT the range. Technically, I believe that even stopping for gas is would be a (again, technically) violation of the rules as written. I am not admitted in RI or MA, so this is completely lay-opinion. Nice range, great group of guys used to be there...hope they still are. Also sell pistols on consignment, bought my first kimber from them!

I'm only going close enough to this to add that
I have been making a KILLING selling 6.8 spc that I had the good sense to stock up on when it was $14 box.
Now it is $30 or better.
    I've actually gotten $45 box.

    As for gun control?

If we took all the guns off the street we would still have a crime problem.
If you took all the criminals off the street, you could not, however, have a gun problem.

    these people are called criminals
    carjackers
    rapists
    home invaders
    robbers
    murderers

"defense ammo" are the munitions most well suited to ending their miserable stinking lives.

Unless the swimming pools are used as a weapon this statement is meaningless.
