A while ago i bought a small cast iron pan thinking that it would be good for making a single egg. In practice I find it difficult to get the spatula under the egg with the relatively tall and close sides. Much easier to use the bigger pan and put 2 or even 3 in the center!

I tried this tonight. The directions on the can said to boil water and simmer oats for 1 minute. they are looking pretty cooked after 1/2 hour. We will see how it goes.

    Continuing with the Aussie theme.

Grilled medallions of Kangaroo loin on a bed of super long green beans fried with Portobello mushrooms with a couple of slices of Damper along side. The only spices were salt and "a little" fresh ground black pepper.

The Roo was delicious. If it wasn't so expensive I would add it often to my diet. Even my wife who was hesitant complimented it. My attempt at Damper was also good but had a slight baking powder taste.

    Always room for improvement!
I do like roo, my opinion is that it has quite a strong flavour, and is very lean so it is prone to being a bit dry if overcooked. I have only had it a few times though.
Glad you are enjoying your experiments.

If you were only suppsed to eat one, they wouldn't be sold by the half dozen .
I invariably cook at least 2 eggs, and an omlette should contain at least 3.

Have you tried the explosion yet?
I personally think milky coffee or hot chocolate work best. Just don't bite too much off the corners, more of a nibble really.
And eat it quick, you will get a feel for when the.drink load is just right, the biscuit will feel slightly soft. Too much and you will need a spoon once you have finished your drink.

OMG you really are a bad influence!

My wife thought that this was a wonderful idea! I am not a coffee drinker but could see the hot chocolate idea. If i make through tomorrow without eating all 5 I have left out of 2 boxes i might take one to work and try with free coffee!.....Or I might have to buy another box or 2.

A couple of hours later I am ready to put them in the refrigerator and they are well cooked to me. No extra liquid and just a slight course texture. I will just try to microwave it in the morning to heat it up.

Why is it taking you so long to make your porridge? It takes all of 10 minutes from start to finish with rolled oats. Is it different with steel cut oats?

I've just got back from the farm, but I have to say you have done well with the Aussie theme. That damper looked perfect to my well tried eye, and they do tend to have a slight baking soda taste. A way around that, if you did over do it, is obviously use less B.S or use (and I don't condone this myself usually) Self Raising Flour. Damper fresh from the camp oven and liberally pasted with butter and Golden Syrup makes for a great Morning or Afternoon Smoko.
I think we might even have to give some serious thought to making you an honourary Aussie.

'Roo meat is one of the highest sources of protein you can get. You don't need as much as you would for beef or any other meat, and yes it is a beautiful meat to eat. A shame it is expensive even here in Australia.

Yes Mick.......Steel cut are unrolled and take longer to cook but the texture and taste is well....In my opinion superior. Chewier and nuttier and creamier....but you should always make them with milk. They are full groats that are halved. I've heard tell uncut groats are pretty good too, but of course there is the longer cooking time again. I have also read somewhere where it was stated that steelcut are better for you fiber wise.

If you got Scots living in Australia then there is a good chance you can find steel cut oats around somewhere. If not..... Amazon.com: steel cut oats The McCann's Irish oats are excellent . And they come in quick and instant for those without patience.
