Oh yes I do! While there were numerous times that I declined accepting the Managership of my Department I was the second man for about 30 years.
I was always proud to be able to say that I could run the new hires to the ground!
Many years ago when my last store opened there was a bulk foods department and it was part of my produce department. My now ex-wife was the 'sub-manager' of the bulk foods. Company Policy clearly stated that those from a family couldn't work together. However twice a week I was my wife's direct supervisor due to the actual manager being on his days off plus there were times while he was on vacation that I was the direct supervisor.
One day I was in the break room when an employee went into the managers office which was right next to the break room. The door was open and she bitched that it wasn't right that I was my wife's supervisor. I can still hear my old manager say; "Ruby I have no problem with Roy being JanaLee's supervisor because I know for a FACT that he's harder on her than any other employee.
One of the reasons that I retired was that I couldn't 'hunker' like I used to and while I could still run the young guys to the ground I paid a price for it. So rather than be 'Sub Par' I left.
When I'm at the store people still tell me how no one in the department can work like I did and I was a SUPERVISOR/at least part of the time. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

A true supervisor in my opinion.
Whenever one can work circles around the others, he deserves the position. It shows you know the job, and can train others in the same fashion.

Thank you, I take that as a great compliment!
When we opened the last store it set an all time Sales Record for a Grand Opening in the Spokane Division. Little Walla Walla beat out any Store in the city of Spokane!
While the Produce Manage was a really nice guy and was a wiz with paperwork, physical labor wasn't his thing. The store opened at 8am on a Sunday and I got there at 1pm and the PM was just turning around and wondering around saying "I can't believe it's so busy". I told him shut up Mark and fill something!
At this same point in time there was a young man about age 15+ who was just a new hire carry out but he came over and said he didn't have anything to do so I quickly showed him how to do this and that to get things filled back up.
That young man was transferred to the Produce Dept and I took him under my wing. At the age of 17 he became a Produce Manager at a much smaller store in our area.
He was given a HUGE Raise as you can't be a Dept Head without being a Journeyman. Basically, he went from minimum wage to full Journeyman.
He later left Safeway but went to work for Albertsons in Lewiston while he attended Lineman School and is employed locally by REA (an electrical provider) as a Senior Lineman.
He also went on to be a Hockey Coach for my kids and I'm very proud of him for all he's done.
I just wish that there were more young people who were like him. He wasn't afraid of hard work and was self disciplined. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Well bevel is getting there the heel is smaller than the rest bevel and blade. Also the spine is thinner near the tang which I honestly am not sure if this is normal but this one is. So my back hurts from sitting too long I am putting her to bed in neats foot and will revisit this another day.
I am happy the bevel is equal both side and pretty darn uniform.Nothing is fool proof, to a sufficiently talented fool...
