Thanks gents. The cherry hardwood may end up in some brush handles and pens but I do love the grain off this particular hunk.
Appreciate the input, horn was my first thought as well. Lots of different scales designs out there so I'm not sure if there was a particular shape for the era. I will probably just freehand something, matching up the spine contour and tang width.

Cleaning up a Rodgers and sons. Thinking of using the dark horn shown in this shot. But also considering some deer antler, or a piece of really beautiful cherry hardwood I have lying about.
Doing some image searches for Rodgers blades as this is my first. Just looking for ideas.

Decided to try my hand at doing an inlay again and I can say that it actually went really well for once. The letters were smooth and well shaped. Well that was until I lost the inlay. Spent 3 days trying to find it and ended up giving up. I think I managed to salvage the scales by modifying the cutout and making a new inlay. I etched a design on nickel silver to try and match the spine work some. Was supposed to be a SOLINGEN inlay, but there was no way I would be able to make a new one of those. The cutout is rougher now even though it is alot simpler. Scales still need alot of shaping, but I didn't want to spend alot of time on them without knowing how the inlay would turn out. So far they don't look to bad so I will go ahead and finish them to see what they will look like. I've started keeping sanding dust from different woods in test tubes just for inlays. For some reason I know that once I finish the scales I am going to find the inlay. Just when you think things are starting to get easier something has to happen.

Reminds me a bit of the symbol associated with sheet music, but symmetrical and balanced.

That inlay had to have fallen down in between something...................

Don't think there is much I can do about the pitting......

Wish I could find some of the flower washers. I haven't seen anyone selling those... A pain to make I imagine.

Noting wrong with that work Bubba!

I really want to remove it from the scales....BUT..... I don't want to damage the flower brass washers...... And one of the washer is pretty bad already.... Oxidized away..... (pretty much gone in other words)
