A parts bin is a handy thing. I never throw my old scales out, even if I only have one side. If nothing else they are great templates, and in this case a quick save.

Nice work going on here gents. Garrison it looks like that leather is just a tad dry. Good thing all you needed was the hardware!

I found a strop for $1 at the flea market a few weeks ago, just the leather, no hardware, no linen. Needs cleaning but it's not nicked up and is still supple. It says "Genuine Shell and Rose's Barber Supply House, Waterloo, IA." I have a length of linen for it, so I've been on the hunt for some hardware.

Well, today I found one with hardware that will work. Check out how DRY this sucker is! But, the hardware is good, just needs a little clean and polish, and soon I'll have a working strop out of the deal.

Sweet piece of Iowa history I never knew Waterloo had a barber supply back in the day. Can't wait to see it Tuzi.

I should have taken a picture of the Rose's strop, but the only one I took a picture of was the crusty cracker there. I'll try to get a before and then an after when I work on it.

Just searching around a bit I see Rose's mentioned as early as 1912 in the Iowa State Gazetteer and Business Directory. And then this from Class & Industrial Marketing 1920

Guessing that the double reflection on that blade was from being full hollow. Hadnt noticed it before. Kind cool.
Some nice things going on gentlemen. Love this tread.

Shaun, that's exactly why I save even some that are broken on one side, for the templates. You never know when you might need a design. Even if the scale is a little narrow, common sense will be that by tracing around it, will make it wider.

Working on an old skinning knife a friend wants to give his father in law for his 80 birthday.
Was in pretty beat up shape when I got it. Most of the blade clean up is already completed.
He wants it in a sheath with his name lasered down the face..
First one of these I've ever tried to make. Normally leave the leather work to those that are better at it. But he wants a name burnt on it, so I figured I'd try.

Mike, I'm interested in how that will work out on leather.
Actually, I think it'll work out okay.

My friend I can't wait to see the outcome as I'm sure that as usual you'll blow us and the recipient away! Hell the clean up is spectacular already
