It may take more than one coat of bluing to get it as deep of a color as you want. It is still fairly effect even without the vinegar. I do understand the challenge of wanting to get a process to work out. Dead blade are perfect for learning with. A dead blade is far from useless. Best thing ever for experiments.
I'm not after a deep blue but this beautiful patina :

You should take some old damaged blades and experiment. You can likely do it with just the blue, that actually turns out more of grays than blues once it is dark and aged a little. You did that bt wrapping it up in a paper towel and wetting it with bluing after the vinegar correct?

Yeh warm vinegar , rinse, then blued, wrapped in tissue added excess bluing liquid, left for 20 mins , then repeated.

It is a beautiful effect and part of creating a patina on an old blade, I think some blade definitely look better with that finish.

Props on all the magic you guys have been putting into these blades.

My problem with razors is really bad.

Terrible, heinous even. Sacreligious to say the least.

I can't find a blade with a broken toe. All I want is to fix up a blade to a dang short. I wanna be part o' the short-stack-club. BUT, Nope, nada, zilch in the antiques stores. My ebay auctions? Sniped. Every. Single. Time.

Excuse my whining, I'll get back to drinking my coffee and pretending it's scotch, heh heh heh
