HAR! Bulley me this, MikeT! Think about the 3/8's or so that the blade is gonna lose off the end getting through the damage. Imagine the smile which shall be created! Gonna get shorter, need reshaping.
The notch may need deepening. Or eliminating?
Not for the feint of heart, My Man! Wait for the scales til after the blade is done.
Double wedge end pins are complete rubbish and a sign of weakness and certainly kill any value (aesthetic or otherwise), of a fine antique blade.

    Don't go there. Please!

    Gawd! I AM a bully!

Hey Mike T, nice start on that blade!
As Tom suggested, keep an eye on your scratch pattern as you progress, but looking good.
I look forward to seeing the progress. The stamping on that WB looks great still!
Been busy myself on non razor projects this week mostly. Work has become a full time job again,, argh.

Damn. You have a very good point about the end the blade losing length. Don't think it will be 3/8, but it is looking like at the least 1/16. Also, good point on the steps/process... I got so excited having a bandsaw again that I forgot "blade first". Always blade first. The blade will change shape.. and so the scales will need to change, the holes now limit what can be done to the scales.
Though I disagree about the double pins. I think to do them right, it is more challenging than single pin. And the resale value is an issue you intend to sell, as it stands there are a great many restoration enthusiasts doing their part to restore and preserve the form of old styles and designs... which leaves me with a bit of wiggle room.
I dunno, the double pin for the moment looks cool to me, but i can see value in restoring a beautiful blade true to old form.
But this will be a shorty won't it? Gonna be altered anyway..
I'll finish the blade and hit the drawing board to see if i feel inspired by the old scales design.
May need to post it on a different thread to avoid Cool Hand Luke's disapproval... just kidding, this is my favorite thread so far.

Well today I got a fair amount of work in but not as much as id like.
Got a basic shape down and sanded to a bit over 1/16", will take it further after I make some adjustments. Drilled the holes, and put some time in on the blade. The blade has some deep pitting, not many but its taking a while as Im not going too low grit.
3750 year old bog oak. Ill be putting two smaller original collars with double pins at wedge end and a bigger collar that I had in scrap bin at pivot. I think it will look good.. you never know until..
MikeT............lookin' very good there brother! Excellent work.

    Keep it real?
I have never used double wedge pins. I like original. I'm old school. I do have a Portland straight I got from a member here but I don't even like the single pin location on it IMHO!

Oh man, well I respect traditional styles and you guys definitely make scales that I enjoy. Personally some of the designs I've seen (new and old) look a little funky..
The wedge ends often stuck out ridiculously far on some old Sheffields , and some of the scales were mass produced, choppy lines, also the wedges on some of them could've been done better.
There are few, but some things really are being done better by some of the artists making straight razors now days, scales are an example.
But what is better? New scales did not travel through time, to reach us as connections into the past, they don't have that vintage feel. I like old blades in old styles. Also, I like old blades with new styles. We see plenty of both. But it cannot be forgot that to be interested in straight razors is to be attracted to vintage . Does that mean every blade should follow strict vintage styles? I hope not. Because I really enjoy trying out all of these old AND new designs.

Just because it is a shorty, doesn't mean it cannot be done in a proper manner, MikeT!

I really want a big chopper shorty! Got one I'm bidding on and you just kicked in my RAD into over drive with that pic! Good job man, way to leave an addict in the mouth of temptation.. Hehehe
That is a great shorty blade and very nice scales. Okay, I got an idea, maybe, just maybe I will get this other chopper shorty off the Bay, put these scales it, masked and make more traditional scales for this celebrated beauty...
