I'm going to have to review this entire thread. I need the inspiration. My wife and I eat completely separately, to the extent of separate kitchens; and my eating has focused way too much on convenience.

I I modified a recipe I came up with almost 30 years ago and from tasting a bit from the mixer it's a good one. I just finished it up and have it in the container and in my chest freezer for later.

Well while it might not have been prepared in the healthiest manner, it was Damn Good!

Tempura Asparagus, Deep fried store bought potatoes (there was a lot more but I was 'nibbling' while the others cooked) and batter fried shrimp.

While I'm not a big 'Veggie' person-- I've done Tempura Green Beans. I've also done tempura cauliflower.

    Here's how supper was made:

Peanut oil heated in a cast iron Dutch oven to 375 degs F.

Then the store bought french fries were cooked until dark golden brown and kept hot in a 375 deg oven with the door open to help keep them crisp.

Here's what made the coatings for tonight's supper:

1 egg well beaten with a bit of salt and ground white pepper mixed in a bowl.

1/2 cup white flour mixed with 1/4 cup corn starch mixed in a bowl

The asparagus was dipped in the egg mixture then dredged in the flour/cornstarch mixture and then fried in peanut oil at about 375 degs F--that gives you the 'tempura'

Then I added enough of the flour mixture to the egg mixture to make a fairly thick batter and dredged the shrimp in the batter and fried until golden brown.

I hope this is of some help.

For all you Southerners out there. Just read this article.I am a big fan of southern food which might be considered odd since I was born and raised in Northern Michigan, yet I totally get and agree with these foods and have had some of them and loved'em.Anybody else think the articles author is dense ha ha?

Yeah the corn bread and buttermilk thing. In my ill spent youth I went to sea with a bunch of old southern sailors. One of their favorite treats was crumbled corn bread in a tumbler of buttermilk. Like peanutbutter and dill pickle sandwiches, the thought of the corn bread and buttermilk mixture kind of grossed me out.Now I really like them. Elvis used to eat corn bread and buttermilk. He called the pieces of corn bread "dunkers". Now, so do I.

I was once on a wreck removal job at Gibraltar. In our stores order we got a bunch of various flavored chips. They were from England. My favorite was prawn flavored. If you ate enough packs of them, you won a free trip somewhere. Probably to the hospital to get your stomach pumped. They were horrible.

I've never been able to take to buttermilk but whole milk and cornbread works enough for me.
