For a soft finish, i have had good luck with using powered pumice. It is cheap and breaks down during use to a satin finish. Use a paper towel, or a finger and be working outdoors to use it dry, as it is dusty. Or, it can be used with an oil or water.

As to the ghost ring around the etch, where to acidic solution bit,it requires use of a Mylar backed abrasive, which does not flex into the etch, to be really removed. The abrasive should be wrapped around a rounded surface so as not to dig into the etch.
    YMMV

I had one of our fine members make a couple do-dads to put on top of my box that holds my hones. BTW, if you look close at the box you will see the lid doesnt cover the top of the box completely. I made it so it still had a tiny opening on each side for ventelation/dry of stones. Hope i dont get 8n trouble with copywrite laws. The letters have been left off the razor but it should look familure...

I've used it on a small leather paddle when polishing China-tana. I used water but oil will be better for the leather .
I remember seeing the suggestion in an article by Bob Egnath.

Started work on this 13/16 Northfield. As you can see, someone went at it sideways with a power tool So, I have some work ahead making that like it never happened. Some pits up by the spine too.

Anyway, started by making some horn scales based on the size, shape and style of the originals. The original scales were quite chewed up. Was able to get both out of the same blank, little bit of color on the end too!
