It looks like you took an old rusty file & put it to some fantastic use. Great job!!!

Looks very nice indeed. I am a bit surprised at how even the file pattern came out on the tang. Well done.

    Thanks Bruno.
There is a bit less file pattern on the other side.
After the initial forging the blank had a slight bend to it.
When tapering the tang I needed to remove more steel from the other side in order keep everything straight.

It is generally impossible to know what a random file is made off. The one thing you can rely on is it will be high carbon. And so far all files I've worked with were oil quenchable.

Unfortunately not a razor but a little fixed blade for my eldest daughter. Still the sheath to make.

Wow, that is a nice blade, reminds me of a whale
The hand sanding will be worth the effort though.

my first straight "DC1" forged on the weekend, shaped & ground to a true flat wedge the other night
now started hollow grinding it last night with my mind numbingly slow & gutless cheapo belt grinder that bogs in on wood scales let a lone any pressure with steel.

either way an hour odd of grinding with the 2" wheel end has got me this far, maybe half way. but it is hollow LOL

Very nice work. Terrific repurposing of a straight file.
I've been googling coal forges and how to build/use them a bit. Seeing work like yours and substances recent posts are quite inspiring for a pre-beginner.
    Thanks.
