Thanked: 4826There are many paths to the perfect pin peening and they are often all correct. I use a plate with a hole in it to measure the amount above the collars so they are all always the same. When assembling scales, I do one end in a drill chuck, using the same spacer. It works for me. I have no idea who gave me the idea, perhaps 10pups.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Scales look perfect, Jerry. You know something, I never thought about your elevation compared to mine. That would cause it to take longer drying. Makes sense to me.! The bubinga is some cool stuff..eh!

Jerry you are doing great work with the wood scales buddy. I'm glad to see you getting putting those pieces to good use, after all the sawing you did!! You know, that bubinga was cut from the same chunk as the piece I sent outback a ways back, and I've made a set of scales and a brush handle of the same piece too. We're all from the same tree here I really like the Caribbean Rosewood too, just wait until you get some finish on it and see it in the right light, a very classy wood. Got a great shape to those scales too.
A lot of great works going on in this thread, I've fallen behind and trying to get caught up. As I said in the other thread, outback you're a magician with scales repair, truly!
As for me, I've been getting a little work done on a blade that's been on the bench seems like forever, got some honey horn scales made for it. Got some pics I'll get around to uploading sometime."Go easy"

Yep, Really like the looks of the Bubinga.
I'm trying a different finishing product on the Carribean Rosewood. Hope it's going to turn out nice. I keep getting bubbles and things in it so tonight, after sanding the flaws out and steal wood to clean it all up I flooded it with the finish with an eye dropper. No bubbles! It's going to take a couple three days to dry but I think it looking like its going to work. This might be my new way to get a clean finish. Was thinking about a heat lamp to help with the drying but I'd hate to overdo it so it will just have to sit on the shelf in my open closet and I'll wait.
Maybe in a few days, I can show them off. Thanks for the help Tuzi and Outback. I'm enjoying doing this. Its just the wait time that drives me nuts! It's just Sharpening, right?

I have learned patience,
Wait till you dip 2 vintage brush handles in 2 shades of Rustoleum six or more times and walk around with a long deck screw protruding from them, twirling constantly to prevent runs. Then, letting them sit for 4 months to cure.
Good stuff takes time!Last edited by sharptonn; 03-01-2018 at 02:17 AM.

This is the set up that Gerrit uses/used to use--to prevent drips and runs on brush handles--Pretty trick--

Yeah. I though about chucking them up in the lathe and gearing it down!
Something I did. Hirlau made fun of me as I remember.
Oh well. A thicker paint job was never had!
I went by and smelled them once a week til I could not smell paint.
Worked a treat! Like fine scotch!
