I finished the scale repairs last night and sanded them to 1K, then a little simichrome polish. I filled the lettering with some gold model paint and a toothpick. They're in the oil soak while I get back to the blade.

Thanked: 4827It’s tricky painting those letters. Mike and Tom use rub n buff or similar. I’ve used paint and paint pens. My system leaves a little to be desired. Yours are looking good.

I filled the lettering in before I started going up the grits (320 start) so I'd sand off any paint that I got "outside the lines". I went slow and also used 10X magnification while I did it. Probably spent 10-15 minutes on it. I'm pretty sure it would have been messier if I'd tried to do it without the magnification.

I thought I'd try to turn my first bowl today. That takes a lot of cutting from a square block. My issue was when my tools got dull. I hadn't set up my sharpening table so I thought I could just go a little longer and... OOPS!
Got a catch while I was trying to thin the inside and it broke. Drew a little blood on a knuckle but no other damage. This wood is called Angelique and sure seems odd looking to me.
Well, I still have enough of it to make a bowl but it won't be as deep now. I will start tomorrow by sharpening my damn tools! Live and learn as they say. I think from now on I will set up my sharpening table first! before rolling out the lathe. It's just Sharpening, right?

Looks like turning tools are just like knives------------dull are your enemy and sharp ones are your friends.
I'm a firm believer that more people get cut with dull knives then sharp ones--Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 4206Looks like gummy wood that Angelique, but interesting.
You and Scott are experimenting, and learning, that’s the fun part. The work that turns out well is the inspiration to turn more..
And you’ve both been making some really pleasing looking items already!
That chisel, wow, really nice details and nuances on it, looks wicked keen too."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."
