I've bought a couple of these and they are good for a few uses then are just no good after that. Guessing diamond files are what i should be looking for. I just hadnt tbought about diamond. Now if i can find some locally would be a bonus too.
Its funny. I live in an area were the population is half a mill, the city is 30+ miles long, and sometimes you cant find what you want locally. Something wrong with this!

I have a bunch of different files for different uses. Grobet makes very file files, and I have a couple of rolls of those, and they work well for pins and such with soft metals, and some inexpensive diamond files and plates for things dealing with hardened steel. For most things I try to buy the best I can find so I only have to buy them once. There is not much here and everything else needs to be shipped in or picked up when you are visiting Canada, it makes getting the good stuff important.

I looked those up Rez. They command a high price but if they are good...
    Thanks for the name "Grobet".

Harbor Freight has diamond jeweler's files but the really nice small machinists diamond files "Eze-Lap" and a lot of other useful tools are available at "Fastinal." They are in most cities and are great for hardware and tools.

    And, after honing...

It took a good edge, and I really enjoyed the shave. It's no longer a 7/8" -- more like a 13/16" -- but I liked the weight of it.

I might be the first person to shave with it in 100 years. It's imperfect, and shows the effects of time, but it did a fine job.
