Would laser engraving be a good way to inset them into the scales...

Laser burning them would set them in for sure. I'd thin them out some from the back side as well before setting but with those unique shapes, setting them into detent would keep them from turning while setting the pins as well.

One thing that I didn't figure for was that the profile changed from one side to the other.

Lincoln only looks to the right...

And all the other presidents look left.

Do you understand why? Its a racist thing, and has been changed on the nickle.

    Its only a joke..!!

    Ahh, right, literally..
Neat idea using the cut out head from the penny, but yes, they will all look the same direction..
Only thing you could do different is to burn the image completely, and mirror it in the software for the rear side, but then you wouldn't be using the copper anymore, only the burner and maybe some gold wash. Would lose the whole, saved from pennies, effect.
Or you make bigger scales and set the entire penny in them, the circular shape of the coin would give the symmetry, even though the heads still look right.
Still a neat idea no matter how you execute it..

Looking good Andrew, the black was my grandfathers and white one my fathers. I can't wait to show my dad. He will be happy.
